Caring for Our Space and for Each Other: Why Cleanliness Matters in the Studio

At our pottery studio, creativity flows freely—but so can something far less welcome: silica dust. As makers who shape clay with our hands and hearts, we’re all exposed to fine particles during everyday tasks like mixing clay, sanding greenware, or cleaning shelves. Over time, breathing in this dust can lead to serious health risks, including silicosis—a preventable but irreversible lung condition.

The good news? We all have the power to protect ourselves and each other—starting with how we care for our shared space.

Cleanliness Is a Form of Care

Wiping down your work area after a session, damp-mopping floors (never dry sweeping!), and keeping tools and scraps neatly stored aren’t just about tidiness—they’re essential steps in keeping silica dust out of the air we breathe. Water suppresses dust; clutter traps it. A few mindful habits go a long way in creating a safer environment for everyone, whether you’re here for a weekly session, open studio time, or firing your latest piece.

A Shared Responsibility

Because our studio runs as a creative community—guided by experienced contractors and sustained by mutual respect—safety isn’t just management’s job. It’s ours. When each of us takes a moment to clean our area, rinse sponges, and dispose of clay scraps properly, we honor the health of our fellow makers and keep this space welcoming for all.

More Than Safety—it’s Flow

There’s a creative benefit, too: a clean, organized workspace clears the mind as much as it clears the table. With tools in their place and surfaces ready for the next hand, inspiration finds room to grow. And when we all pitch in, the studio stays open, functional, and joyful for private events, consignment displays, and quiet solo sessions alike.

Let’s Keep Making—Safely and Together

We’re not just shaping clay; we’re shaping a community built on care, creativity, and shared stewardship. By staying mindful of dust, cleaning as we go, and looking out for one another, we ensure that everyone—newcomers and seasoned makers alike—can create with confidence, calm, and joy.

Thank you for doing your part to keep our studio beautiful, safe, and alive with possibility.
